From Hackathon Idea to Game-Changer: How GitHub Copilot Voice is Transforming Coding Accessibility

After winning the Executive Challenge, we casually emailed GitHub's CEO about our project—never expecting it to spark such an impactful collaboration! My key takeaway: take risks—the worst outcome is still a hack win!

About GitHub Copilot Voice

One of the most inspiring innovations to emerge from the Microsoft Hackathon is now shaping the future of software development: GitHub Copilot Voice – an AI-powered, voice-controlled coding tool that is redefining what’s possible for developers with accessibility needs.

The project began in 2021 as “Hello Cody: Voice Assistant for VS Code,” created by a passionate Hackathon team with a bold vision—to empower developers to code using only their voice. Highlighting the team’s commitment, Ed Essey, Senior Director of Business Value, emphasized, “A part of the success of this project is how the project team embraced The Garage Growth Framework—to the letter—and earned executive sponsorship.” What started as an experiment has evolved into a transformative tool, now available as “Hey Code” / “VS Code Speech” features within GitHub Copilot.

By enabling developers with physical disabilities—such as those with repetitive strain injuries—to navigate and control their Integrated Development Environment (IDE) through voice commands, GitHub Copilot Voice is helping make software engineering more accessible and inclusive than ever before.

But the impact doesn’t stop there.

Voice-enabled coding not only supports those with accessibility needs—it also enhances efficiency and reduces the physical strain of traditional keyboard use for all developers. It’s a powerful example of how inclusive design benefits everyone, driving both innovation and productivity.

“Advancements in generative AI and voice technology have massive potential to transform software engineering for developers with accessibility needs—and in doing so, make the field more inclusive for everyone,” said Priyankar Kumar, Senior Software Engineer, Office AI, Experiences + Devices, and the original ideator of the project.

What began as a Hackathon idea is now part of a larger movement toward more inclusive technology—proving that making products accessible is a win for everyone.
